So, I'm Not as Cool as I Think I Am!

Okay, I admit, I've always thought I was pretty cool. All the way back to when my mom would play her old fogey music, I thought, "I'm going to save my records to show my kids how cool I was"---The Beatles, Herman's Hermits, etc. Even if I'd really saved them, the actual records themselves would be so old fogey, that we don't even HAVE a way to play them now.

Fast forward 50 years. I've been very proud of myself that my grandkids think I'm cool. Steph has related stories about the girls asking her for advice, then telling her it was lousy advice and they would just have to ask grammy. Pump me up.

There's the clothes issue. On her Christmas list, Morgan put---"anything from Abercrombie---and grammy, I don't want a gift card, I want you to pick it out". Pump me up.

Boy advice---I'm on top of it.  Friend advice, ditto.  Music, no question. Although I must admit, I threw the girls under the bus last week when a song came on my iPod with really foul language. Butch was outraged. I told him it was obviously the girls' music. They later told me that he was all over them about it. To tell the truth, I didn't even realize I'd purchased an "explicit" song. Not so cool.

Yesterday, we went shopping. Steph remarked at how cold the mall was as she rubbed her hands together. The girls were like, "mom, you are so weird"! Steph said, "do you know how demoralizing it is to have your kids think their grammy is cooler than me"? Pump me up.

Then reality hits. I picked Jordan up from school a couple weeks ago to go to Morgan's basketball game. As soon as we hit the gym, Jordan dropped me like a hot potato--never even making eye contact once she got with her friends. Oh wait, she did "drop by" for money for the concession stand. Okay, I can take it. Let out a little air.

Then the other day, we're coming home from school and a particular song came on that I like. I said, "oooh, is this 3 Doors Down"? The girls both laughed, "grammy, it's "2" Doors Down"! I covered, sleekly by saying, "oh yeah, 3 Doors Down is one door down from 2 Doors Down, ha, ha, ha". Ssssss...

I just need to face it, the girls probably don't really think I'm all that cool. They just like me a lot. It could be the Marble Slab, movies, shopping trips and running them and their friends all over town. That's okay, I'll gladly take what I can get. After all, I'm thrilled to be such a big part of their life at this age!

At least Victoria and Elizabeth still think I'm cool. Mitchell? Not so much. I did tell him that I was going to buy a pair of Nike's just like his and wear them around his friends to show how cool I was. He shook his head and said, "grammy, all I've got to say is, I feel sorry for the girls". He's a boy. I never really thought I'd be cool to a boy anyway. I just love teasing the heck out of him--like dancing around him singing, "don't you wish your girlfriend was HOT like ME"!

I look at it this way, I'm creating fun memories. I can't wait until they grow up and can tell "grammy" stories! That's waaaaay COOL!!!

PS These girls are definitely giving Steph a run for her money. On our way home from the mall, she was all over them about something. About mid-way through her rant, she used the wrong tense of a word. The girls (and I must admit, me too) burst out laughing. Sort of took the wind out of Steph's sails! Ya know what I mean?

  1. Believe it or not, Mitchell does think you are a cool Grammy! Most of his friends have very old grandparents, so he thinks it's great that you and Dad are so young. And he was quite impressed with your Grammy Awards review. Most of his friends' parents wouldn't even know most of the stuff that you know about music, let alone their grandparents. And Mitchell still laughs about the fog horn. Do you remember that? You gave him a fog horn (I'm not sure why), and then used it to call him home from the neighbor's house as you were also yelling his name from the front porch. You've certainly created a memory that I'm sure he'll never forget!
And as for my girls, they adore you!

  2. Those "youngsters" aren't as smart as they think because I've listened to Three Doors Down and never even heard of Two Doors Down.

  3. Anyone contemplating their cool factor (at whatever age) should definitely come and spend a week with my girls. You'll soon find out - you're a total dork! What's really weird, though, is that the tables are turning. I find that I am thinking the girls are cool more often then before and even find myself asking their opinions on things like wardrobe! I guess they are really growing up.

  4. Sandy, yes, I do remember the fog horn and even was going to work that into my blog---but it just didn't quite fit.

Jeanne, I just happened to get it wrong again---in relaying the story. Yes, it is Three Doors Down.

Steph, yes, the girls are really growing up so fast.
